SPAR and James Hall & Co. Ltd are bringing back a popular design competition to celebrate the charity partnership with Marie Curie, the UK’s leading end of life charity.

Launching today (Thursday 9th November 2023), SPAR customers will have the chance to design the pack of the SPAR brand Egg Mayonnaise sandwich sold in SPAR stores across the North of England.

Marie Curie’s signature yellow will need to be included in the design, but customers are being given ‘free range’ on the rest of the design with their creativity and imagination.

The winning design will feature on the packaging of SPAR’s Egg Mayonnaise sandwiches for six months.

During that period, every SPAR Egg Mayonnaise sandwich sold in a SPAR store owned or serviced by James Hall & Co. Ltd will contribute 5p to Marie Curie, an increase on the regular one penny per sale pledge that exists across the range throughout the year.

In the last 12 months, more than 300,000 Egg Mayonnaise sandwiches were sold in SPAR stores across the North of England, and this has helped the total amount raised for Marie Curie by James Hall & Co. Ltd through sandwich sale pledge to pass £325,000 since 2016.

The sandwich pack design competition will run until 2nd January 2024, and the winning design will feature on sandwich packs from Spring next year. The winner will also be presented with a BMX scooter.

People can enter the competition by picking up a colouring template at their local SPAR store in the North of England. Alternatively, the form can be downloaded from a dedicated space on the James Hall & Co. Ltd website at www.jameshall.co.uk/design-a-sandwich-pack and be printed off.

Once completed, entries can be uploaded via the same web address, emailed in to [email protected], or posted directly to the company’s Distribution Centre marked for the Marketing Department at: James Hall & Co. Ltd, Bowland View, Preston, PR2 5QT.

Tom Murphy, Marketing Manager at James Hall & Co. Ltd, said: “We are excited to bring our Marie Curie design competition back for SPAR customers, this time in the form of our SPAR Egg Mayonnaise sandwich pack, a favourite filing for many.

“The lorry design competition we ran in autumn last year was hugely successful, and the winning design was a bright and colourful celebration of the charity partnership between SPAR and Marie Curie.

“As the dark nights have returned this autumn, we really hope this allows time for our customers, and in particular our young shoppers, to concentrate their creativity on our competition to draw up some fantastic entries.”

Imogen Duffin, Corporate Partnership Manager at Marie Curie, said: “As soon as the idea to bring back the Marie Curie design competition was suggested, we were fully supportive of it as we know it struck a chord with SPAR customers.

“The winning design will be on the shelves of SPAR stores across the North of England every single day for six months, and we think it is a fantastic way of raising awareness of our partnership with SPAR.

“We are extremely grateful to SPAR and James Hall & Co. Ltd. The money raised from the sandwich sales will help us be there for anyone with an illness they are likely to die from, and those close to them.”

James Hall & Co. Ltd is a fifth-generation family business which serves a network of independent SPAR retailers and company-owned SPAR stores across Northern England six days a week from its base at Bowland View in Preston.
